Emmerich Kálmán International Operetta-Musical Conducting Competition 2012

The competition aims to:

- discover the most promising young conductors from various countries
- present the most famous Hungarian operettas and their successors, the musicals of contemporary Hungarian composers
- create an entertaining, yet substantial and professional theatrical programme

Preliminaries: The preliminary rounds will take place in Hungary – Budapest, Russia – Moscow, St. Petersburg, Austria – Graz, Italy – Trieste, Romania – Cluj-Napoca, and in one of the main cities of Japan, Australia and USA .

Semi-finals: Budapest Operetta and Musical Theatre, 21 and 22 of September, 2012 (television broadcast)

Finals: The finals will take place in the Budapest Operetta and Musical Theatre on the 27th of October, 2012, the day of the Hungarian Operetta, on the occasion of Imre Kálmán’s 130th birthday.

Conditions of entry:
All participants must complete the official application form and send a detailed curriculum vitae with the photocopies of documents certifying the musical studies (either ongoing or finished).

The competition is open to candidates born after January 1 1973.

Competition Programme:

1, Preliminaries:

The examination for the preliminary rounds will consist of an elective selection of the operettas and musicals from the list can be read at the bottom of this page. The participants must choose from this list 2 songs (1 operetta and 1 musical song) and must conduct these two songs in maximum 30 minutes (inclusive the instructing the pianist and the singers). The chosen music scores can be sent via e-mail for the applicants.
The registration fee (30 EUR) must be sent to the local organiser prior the preliminaries. The accommodation and travelling costs must be paid by the participant.

2, Semi-finals (The best 12 participants):

The participants must conduct 3 songs (1 solo, 1 duet and 1 finale or tutti song) from the operettas and musicals from the preliminary list with soloists and orchestra.

Due to the television broadcast, the songs will be paired prior to the semi-final rounds and will randomly be assigned to the competitors, who must be prepared to conduct any of the 36 songs can be read at the bottom of this page. All the 36 music scores will be sent for the semi-finalists in advance.

The competition fee (EUR 50,-) must be paid to the local Hungarian organiser. The travelling and accommodation costs must be paid by the participant (upon request, the local organizers may be of help in finding accommodation)!

3, Finals (The best 5 participants):

The participants must conduct 4 songs (1 solo, 1-1 duet/trio/quartet and 1 tutti song) from the operettas and musicals from the preliminary list with soloists, choir, ballet and orchestra.

Due to the live broadcast, the songs will be paired prior to the final rounds and will randomly be assigned to the competitors, who must be prepared to conduct any of the 20 songs they will get in advance with the music sheets.

The competition fee (EUR 50,-) must be paid to the local Hungarian organiser. The travelling and accommodation costs are paid by the organisers.
